Analysis Of The Perks Of Being A Wallflower Post Production- Charlie's Breakdown
The post production on this scene highlights Charlie's mood, it cuts between flashbacks and "live" action giving the audience the idea that Charlie is remembering things about his past and reflecting on it. 30 seconds in to this scene, Charlie starts to appears within the same frame more than once, creating an on screen representation of his mind at that moment, with each version of himself portraying a different thought that is whirling around in his brain. Mary Jo Markey (the editor of this film) layered audio of charlie repeatedly saying "it's all my fault" over images of Charlie as a child and his Aunts car crash, this creates a feeling of guilt and shows how desperate Charlie is in this moment. As Charlie falls further into his breakdown the cuts between flashbacks and him breaking down become quicker, this makes the audience feel all his emotions building up, the non diegetic music being played over the scene also starts to get louder during this time, this sutures in the audience and makes them feel the panic and pain that Charlie is experiencing. Markey used a montage of empty shots of the house to represent how empty Charlie is feeling. At the end of this scene when the music is at its loudest and Charlie is at his most desperate the door is kicked in, making the audience feel relief as after this the music stops and everything becomes calm once again.
